Power distributor UMEME wants Uganda’s parliament to amend the current Electricity Act of 1999 to recommend tough penalties against power theft and vandalism which costs the company over Sh100bn every year.
Sam Zimbe, the deputy managing director UMEME observes that the current penalties are not harsh enough to deter people from stealing power a vice which he says stands at 24.7 percent.
He says the grim effects of the vices are felt every day through constant power outages, the dangerous power surges and unstable supply, deaths recorded in almost every region and has a great impact on power tariffs.
Statistics also indicate that 47 people die every year in Uganda from electrocution as a result of power theft.
