Age Limit Debate Update: TENSION AND FEAR

1. Police has sealed off Forum for Democratic Change head offices in Najjanakumbi, no one is allowed to enter. Two patrols and over 30 police officers are there to make sure no one goes in.

2. Police has dispersed an attempted anti age limit demonstration in Makerere University. Police has fired tear gas and rubber bullets around Lumumba and Mary Stuart student halls.

3. Three Makerere University student leaders have been arrested by the Police. The arrested are the academics minister Simon Wanyera, Ronald Ainebyoona and another unidentified student. Police arrested them as students who were gathered around Lumumba hall started throwing stones at the police.

The United States is deeply concerned that recent arrests and raids stifle the Ugandan people’s right to free expression and tarnish Uganda’s global image. We are disturbed by reports of raids on NGOs. Infringements on protected rights under Uganda’s Constitution will impede the country’s development. We call on the Government of Uganda to guarantee all its citizens freedom of speech, expression, and assembly, without fear of intimidation.
